According to the IOM report, the border region between Mexico and the United States is one of the most visible sites of migrant deaths in the Americas.

The Missing Migrants Project (MMP) – which collects both official data and various media – points out that the number of deaths on the continent made the year 2019 “one of the most fatal ever recorded

In the continent, there were more than 3,000 deaths since 2014, while in the country the number was 2,403 deaths in six years.

Most of the deaths were recorded in the waters of the Rio Grande / Rio Grande, which runs between Texas and the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and Coahuila, in which 109 people lost their lives in 2019, this means an increase 26% of the 86 deaths recorded in 2018 in the same place.

The deadly route to America

The document announced that at least 800 people have lost their lives crossing deserts, rivers and remote territories on different migration routes in America in 2019.

” These figures are a sad reminder that the lack of options for safe and legal mobility leads people to more invisible and risky roads, putting them in serious danger,” said IOM Director of Data Analysis Center Frank Laczko .The loss of human lives should never be naturalized or tolerated as an assumed risk of irregular migration. Frank Laczko, director of the IOM Data Analysis Center.

In this context, other deaths of migrants in Mexican territory are added to the deaths that occur on the border with the United States. According to this information center, in 2019 there were at least 630 migrant deaths in Mexican territory.

The deaths in 2020

According to IOM monitoring, so far in 2020, there are 15 migrants killed in Mexican territory (4 in the southeast of the country and 11 on the border with the United States).

The report mentions the case of a 47-year-old Cuban migrant who was found dead in Tula, Hidalgo, according to information from the AM digital portal. The authorities subsequently confirmed that the man was originally from the island.

The deaths are a context in which Mexico has intensified its strategy to prevent the passage of migrants who cross the country to the United States.

Since last June, when the Mexican government signed an agreement with its US counterpart with this objective after the threat of rising tariffs, the deportation of foreigners has increased by at least 50%.
