Mazatlán, Sinaloa.- Given the current situation regarding the Covid-19 Coronavirus, tourist destinations such as Cancun and Los Cabos will be receiving fewer foreign tourists, in such a way that they will have to focus on attracting Mexican tourists, lowering their rates for it, explained Carlos Berdegué Sacristán.
“What is going to happen, that is already a fact, is that in destinations like Cancun and Riviera Maya – which have tremendous demand – they are going to look for the national market and they are going to lower hotel prices and that is going to force the prices of all national destinations go down, rates will go down, “said the president of the Association of Hotels and Tourist Companies of Mazatlán.
“Cancun, not having as much international tourist as it always has, is going to turn stronger towards the national market and to be able to do that, to compete, it has to lower prices,” he said.
For this reason, he said that destinations such as Mazatlán will be forced to offer cheaper rates in order to continue competing.
“If prices start to drop to Mazatlán levels, we are going to have to lower prices more so that they come here and don’t go to Cancun.”
“Cancun was a destination that for many Mexicans did not pull because of the expensive, or Los Cabos, for example. Now when the rates drop all those hotels many people are going to turn around and say ‘look, why don’t we go this year, It is enough for me. ‘Then a tariff war is going to come, that is a fact, that is already happening, “said the hotel leader.
