Strengthening of tourism

Currently, the Government of Guatemala is committed to strengthening tourism through different activities, which have already given positive results.

In addition, there are cruise lines that have shown interest in creating work spaces for Guatemalans. These include Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Corunna Crises Line. They all present a job offer with decent wages.

The strategy not only aims to recruit merchant seamen but also seeks to attract international tourism.

The numbers

According to the records of the authorities, during the 2018-2019 cruise season, 136 thousand 548 passengers docked. This represented the visit of foreigners, mainly from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Statistics show that 63 percent of these tourists toured the country, visiting places such as Antigua Guatemala, Tikal, the Pacific beaches, volcanoes, Autosafari Chapín, Atitlán and Iximché, among others.

The average expenses of each visitor were 208 dollars in the purchase of tour packages, handicrafts, textiles, jewelry and clothing. The restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic forced these activities to be suspended a year later, but they were reactivated last year. This has made it possible to strengthen the economy in the Pacific and the Guatemalan Caribbean.
