The Judas 2023 crafting and burning contest will take place on Saturday, April 8, 2023 in the city’s cathedral square
The Lions Club of San Cristóbal de Las Casas and the Coordinator of the Feria de la Primavera y La Paz 2023 in its 153rd edition announced that registrations are open to participate in the burning of Judas contest that takes place every year in the colonial city of San Cristobal de Las Casas.
The Judas 2023 making and burning contest will take place on Saturday, April 8, 2023 in the city’s cathedral square, where the works made by artisans and artists from the region will be exhibited and qualified by the judges. The technique used to make the Judas is traditional and is made with reeds and cardboard with paint and enamel finishes.
The theme of the contest is free, as long as it does not offend or damage the morals of third parties, and the originality and finishing of the works to compete will be qualified. The works must have a minimum height of one meter and a maximum of 2.50 meters and a width of 1.50 meters, including bases and decorative elements. Materials that facilitate burning, such as clothing, plastic, metals, wood, and fur, are allowed, but those with a high content of dangerous explosives are not.
The prizes for the winners will be: first place 19,000 pesos, second place 13,000 pesos and third place 8,000 pesos, respectively. Registration to participate in the contest is open and more information can be obtained at the Lions Club facilities or with the Fair committee.
Citizens are invited to witness the burning of the works next Saturday of glory and to enjoy the 2023 Spring and Peace Fair in its 153rd edition, which begins that same night. The organizers stress the importance of following the rules of the contest to avoid disqualifications and guarantee security in the event.
