By a court order, bullfights will be canceled within the framework of the Spring and Peace Fair in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas.

The Second District Court for Amparo and Federal Trials in the State of Chiapas granted an amparo for the cancellation of the bullfights scheduled for the Feria de la Primavera y las Paz, which began this Sunday in San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

The Animalix Alma Mestiza, Civil Association group celebrated the measure, while noting that “justice has been favorable for the rights of animals in San Cristóbal de Las Casas by granting the amparo with number 519 / 2023-V.”

Its director, Ericka Brand, said in a statement that “this resolution is a victory for animal rights, but also for the people of San Cristóbal; We hope this ruling sends a clear message to the rest of the country that it is time to put an end to this cruel and archaic practice.”

The mayor Mariano Alberto Díaz Ochoa assured that he will abide by the resolution and reported that the city council, owner of the La Coleta bullring, filed a non-conformity appeal, for which reason it is awaiting the response.

The businessman Enrique Solís said in the morning that “unfortunately the bullfight scheduled for this Sunday will not take place, but it is not cancelled. I want to be precise about that: The bullfight is not cancelled; it is only postponed. We are going to comply with the mandate of the judge who orders to suspend it. We do not want to provoke acts of violence at this party. San Cristóbal is living its fair, which is a party for the citizenry”.

At a press conference he reiterated that “the bullfights are not cancelled; they are going to be rescheduled. So much so that we have the presence” of the matadors, the rejoneador and the businessman Javier Garfias.

“A fair without a bullfight is not a fair,” he said, adding that the date on which the bullfight will take place will probably be announced this Monday. For many years it has been a tradition that during the first Sunday of the fair there is a bullfight.

For this Sunday’s bullfight, the presence of the bullfighter, Fauro Aloi, and the matadors, José María Pastor and Jussef, were scheduled.

Díaz Ochoa pointed out that “there is a suspension from a federal court because a citizen (Eduardo Delgado Durán) dissatisfied with the bullfights, and they give us the benefit so that we can defend ourselves. On Thursday we filed our disagreement because bullfights at the San Cristóbal fair have been around for a lifetime and we are awaiting the resolution, but we continue; With bulls or without bulls, the fair will continue”.

He expressed that the council notified the businessmen that “the bullfight cannot be carried out; and they will present their demands. The bullfighters and bulls are already in San Cristóbal. Let’s hope that over the hours it can be fixed and if we postpone the bullfights” for the next few days.

He reiterated that “the city council has to abide by the order of the federal court. We are institutions and we have to abide by it, but if we manage to get the bullfights released for us”, they will be carried out.

Animalix urged the mayor Mariano Alberto Díaz Ochoa and the municipal secretary, Sandra Patricia Moshán Sánchez to “respect the protection” and “immediately suspend the bullfighting shows scheduled for April 9, 12 and 16.”

He added that in addition, the city council “must suspend the granting of permits to carry out these shows”, while remembering that Animalix has “fought for the cancellation of bullfights in San Cristóbal for several years, we consider that this show or event It is an act of animal abuse and cruelty.”
