San Cristóbal-Comitán highway released after blockade

Residents of Teopisca demonstrate in the municipal seat to demand that rulers no longer be imposed in their community, after the assassination of the municipal president.

San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chis. More than 500 agents of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSyPC) restored traffic on the Pan-American highway, the San Cristóbal-Comitán section, which remained blocked by opponents of the mayoress of Teopisca, Josefa María Sánchez Pérez.

The SSyPC reported in a statement that the opening of the road was carried out “with total respect for human rights and was carried out with the presence of the police and dissuasive overflights at the place called La Campana and the central park of Teopisca, where the demonstrators blocked free transit to San Cristóbal de Las Casas and Comitán”.

He indicated that “the persons were urged to legally channel their demands before the corresponding institutions in order not to affect the citizenry and after that order was restored and this channel of communication was fully released.”

The protesters, who demanded the formation of a municipal council, had closed the highway on Tuesday at noon at La Campana, located at the exit from Teopisca to Comitán.

Residents of Teopisca reported that the protesters had placed logs and stones on the road and set up tents to remain in La Campana, but the security forces withdrew them, in addition to taking control of the municipal seat.

They commented that the residents who blocked the road are followers of Javier N, alias La Pulga, arrested over the weekend and detained in the El Amate prison, accused of the crimes of riot and attacks against the peace and community of the state to the detriment of the company, as reported at the time by the State Attorney General’s Office.

Javier is one of the main opponents of Sánchez Pérez, who served as a trustee of the Teopisca city council and in September was appointed substitute mayor in place of Rubén de Jesús Valdez Díaz, of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico, shot to death in June 2022 .
