Migrants from Haiti and African countries broke into the offices of the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (Comar) in Tapachula, Chiapas, leaving several people injured.
The events occurred during the morning of Monday, September 18, when those involved tried to enter the property and demand their stay in the country.
Through a video shared on social networks, you can see people in a kind of human stampede and, according to reports, there were thousands of migrants outside the property, so municipal police and national guards tried to contain the mobilization, but they were overwhelmed.
Some migrants fell to the ground, while others walked over them after knocking down the metal mesh. According to data from Milenio, at least 10 migrants were injured during the break-in to the building.
The State Committee of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) spoke out about what happened on its X account (formerly Twitter), pointing out that this is what happened derived from immigration policy, and took the opportunity to denounce that there are no guarantees for migrants.
“This is the result of a bad Immigration Policy that is exploding in their hands today. Not only are they overwhelmed in terms of security, but there are also no humanitarian guarantees for the migrants who arrive in Mexico today.”
It should be noted that there were women and children at the site, as can be seen in the images shared on social networks. Derived from the emergence of migrants, Comar had to temporarily suspend its activities.
Local media indicated that the main people responsible for the irruption would be of Haitian origin, while the crowd was made up of people from various countries. No seriously injured people were reported, but some migrants had to be treated by health personnel.
Last May, the National Migration Institute (INM) reported the rescue of 175 migrants who were traveling crammed in a tractor-trailer in the streets of Chiapa de Corzo after federal immigration agents stopped the driver of a vehicle after which the uniformed officers heard screams and blows coming from inside the unit.
The people were found after the driver of the tractor-trailer did not want to open the rear door, but the agents were able to see the faces of the people who were trapped, among whom were women and children.
Among the rescued people were 28 minors who were not accompanied by an adult. Five families were also identified, three from Ecuador and five from Guatemala, the driver was arrested.
This rescue is added to the one that occurred at the end of March when the INME located 123 migrants who came from 12 countries and who were inside a box of a torton-type truck abandoned on the Echegaray branch, in the Ejido Montecristo in the municipality of Pijijiapan.
The people were found after the driver of the vehicle accelerated when elements of the National Guard stopped him. As a result, both the pilot and the co-pilot escaped into the bushes in the area, while the migrants from the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Georgia, Ecuador, Pakistan, Brazil, Guatemala, Albania, Honduras, India, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan were left behind.
According to official data, at least until the month of August, approximately 100,000 foreigners requested refuge in Mexico and most of that number was managed in Tapachula. Comar has indicated that there is a significant number of migrants seeking to be granted asylum in Mexico.
