Animal abuse continues to be a serious problem in Chiapas, where cases of animal cruelty continue to increase. In various localities of the state, such as San Cristóbal de las Casas and Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the poisoning of dogs through the supply of water contaminated with toxic substances has been reported.

In this regard, Celeste Coello Armas, founder and president of Provida Animal JDCA. A.C., in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, said in an interview that in San Cristóbal and Tuxtla Gutiérrez there is animal abuse, while the state of Chiapas has not created laws to protect animals, meanwhile, animal abuse continues in Chiapas and all of Mexico.

“In San Cristóbal, in Tuxtla, in Chiapas there are mistreated animals, the state of Chiapas is the first place in Mexico with the highest rate of animal abuse, the only state that does not have a law that protects animals, there are 60% of abandoned and mistreated animals, mostly found in markets because the same people abandon them, at least there they are given food, also in the intersections and on the main avenues of San Cristóbal de las Casas they are abandoned, we can find many abandoned animals in the streets, in the garbage dumps, but many are poisoned,” she said.

The activist stressed that on many occasions, people poison dogs by providing them with contaminated water and food. These acts have resulted in numerous animal deaths in the region. A particularly cruel case occurred in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, where a German shepherd dog that fell from a roof and fractured its legs was abandoned in a garbage dump. His owners gagged and tied him up, leaving him to slowly die as maggots infested his wounds.

The lack of a law to protect animals in Chiapas exacerbates the situation. Nationally, Mexico ranks first in animal abuse and abandonment in Latin America, followed by Colombia and Brazil. The absence of an adequate legal framework in Chiapas prevents acts of animal cruelty and abandonment from being adequately punished.

Activists and organizations are fighting for the implementation of laws to punish animal abuse and abandonment in Chiapas. The need for legislation is urgent to provide a legal basis to sanction those responsible and protect animals from future abuse.

Animal abuse in Chiapas is a crisis that requires immediate attention. The implementation of animal protection laws is essential to combat this problem and ensure dignified and humane treatment of animals. Meanwhile, activists continue their fight for justice and animal protection, hoping for a change that will save lives and eradicate cruelty in the state.
