7 municipalities of Chiapas were affected by the heavy rains of the weekend

The level of the Amarillo River, which runs through the northern part of San Cristóbal, is currently at 95% of its capacity. However, if the rains continue today, it could overflow, which would affect several colonies and neighborhoods in the northern and western parts of the city. For its part, the Fogótico River, which runs through the southern part of the city, is maintaining its level, and firefighters have been monitoring the situation since early Sunday morning.

Tropical storm Nadine has caused heavy rains in San Cristóbal de las Casas. According to the report of the firefighters, so far there are no people evacuated; some families have been removed from their homes and transferred with relatives. However, there is a possibility that the river may overflow its banks, and flooding has been reported on several streets, so the population is asked to be attentive to the calls of this department since the bad weather still persists in the region.

Since 6 a.m. this Sunday, the fire brigade team, along with several units, has been checking the rivers. Some people have been transferred to relatives’ homes, but so far the shelters, which could be the El Carmen Convention Center and the Sutram Auditorium, have not been used. A call is made to the public to be alert for any emergency.

The flooding in the streets has been reported in the Santa Cecilia, San Ramón, Wenceslao Domínguez Street, La Isla, Brasil Street, Colonia Molino, Cuitláhuac, and Mexicanos neighborhoods. In case of emergency, you can call directly to 967 67 819 89, where a fire brigade personnel will be receiving all calls.

As of Sunday morning, there has been no statement from Civil Protection, but it is known that they are carrying out patrols in the northern and western areas of the city. In addition, the Army and National Guard personnel continue to carry out their work, inviting the population to be alert to any emergency or flooding of the rivers.

The rains of the last few hours have caused significant damage in several municipalities in Chiapas, according to preliminary reports from the State Civil Protection System. Municipal authorities have activated care and prevention operations to safeguard the population, especially in Ixhuatán, Rayón, Pichucalco, Pantepec, Tapilula, and Rincón Chamula San Pedro.

In light of the rising of the La Sierra River, the Municipal Civil Protection System carried out the preventive evacuation of four families. Two were transferred to temporary shelters and the other two to facilities set up in the city hall, where they received mats and blankets.
