Although thousands of lights, series and several meters of cable were vandalized in the historic center of the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas two days ago, this did not prevent it from being illuminated. Thousands of citizens witnessed the lighting of the lights in the walkways, the central park, the San Cristóbal Museum, hotels and restaurants. Security and Civil Protection elements remained in the city center to protect the population.

Last Saturday night, the first authority of the municipality was in charge of lighting the Christmas tree, installed in front of the San Cristóbal Museum (Musac), as well as the lights in the walkways, the central park, hotels and restaurants. More than 5,000 people attended the event, and since then many took advantage to take pictures as a souvenir. Men, women, girls and boys enjoyed the beautification of the city center, despite the cold recorded in the Jovel valley.

Around midnight, the thousands of attendees began to leave. Some cafes and restaurants were packed by dozens of people. The first square of the city was closed by municipal traffic personnel, in order to facilitate the circulation of attendees.

Finally, the thousands of lights, series and meters of cable installed in the historic center will remain during the month of December and will be removed after the celebration of the Three Kings in January 2025. In the meantime, citizens and national and international tourists will enjoy this lighting. In the coming days, Christmas and New Year 2025 will be celebrated in the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas, where visitors will also enjoy the low temperatures characteristic of the colonial city.
