In a coordinated operation, the Army, Mexican Navy, National Guard, and the Pakal Immediate Force and Reaction Group (FRIP) of the State Police targeted neighborhoods in San Cristóbal de las Casas where Tzotzil gang cells have been operating since 2015. These gangs have instilled fear in both locals and visitors through their involvement in drug dealing and other illegal activities.

The operation, which took place in the early hours of the day, saw hundreds of law enforcement officers taking control of several neighborhoods. They conducted searches in established stores and markets, including the José Castillo Tielemans market, where narcotics and other illegal products were being sold. Several suspicious individuals were also intercepted near the supply center in the Historic Center of the city.

While some Tzotzils expressed satisfaction with the operation, they were upset by the arrest of some men, including minors, during routine checks. “We don’t sell anything bad here. The operations are good, but sometimes the police go too far,” said a merchant whose business was searched.

The searches extended to the Once Cuartos neighborhood and other areas, including mechanics’ workshops selling used car parts. Chiapas prosecutor Jorge Luis Llaven and Secretary of Public Security Oscar Aparicio Avendaño led the searches, uncovering dozens of engines, dismantled vehicles, and countless parts.

Surveillance cameras maintained by criminal groups were deactivated throughout the city. Reporters observed the arrest of up to a dozen men linked to vehicle theft and dismantling organizations. Additionally, several Tzotzils were arrested in possession of drugs and firearms.
