Another hotel is closing in San Cristóbal de las Casas, an establishment recognized by tourists, who stayed there for more than 40 years. This is the second hotel to close in this colonial city, and the reasons are unknown so far. It should be remembered that Posada El Paraíso, located about 100 meters from the Plaza Catedral de San Cristóbal, closed its doors at the end of 2024, and currently remains closed.
Now, the Hotel Rincón del Arco, located on Ejército Nacional Street, in the Guadalupe neighborhood, east of the city, has also closed. This hotel, which operated for more than 40 years, served thousands of national and international tourists. Until now, the reason for its closure is unknown. There have been no official reports from the owners, and the employees were fired without notice.
The Gran Hotel Rincón del Arco was, for many years, a meeting place for politicians, organizations, social and religious events, and graduations from various educational institutions. The restaurant was visited by thousands of tourists, teachers, and citizens, who enjoyed the views and the unique atmosphere of the hotel. Now, these great memories have been forgotten.
On a tour of Ejército Nacional Street, it was observed that the hotel remained closed, without any guard. The only visible trace was the sign that said “Hotel Rincón del Arco.” Its doors and main gates remain closed, while some neighbors indicate that the closure could be due to economic problems. According to the comments of the dismissed workers, the reason behind the closure of this emblematic colonial hotel, which has tiled roofs, gardens, and a beautiful landscape for the inhabitants of the Guadalupe neighborhood, has not been publicly explained.
For her part, the president of the hoteliers of San Cristóbal de las Casas, in an interview, explained that businesses that close in the city usually do so for personal reasons. He recalled that in previous months several establishments in San Cristóbal laid off staff, since when a business goes bankrupt, the first thing the owner does is lay off employees. Despite the situation, he hopes that this year 2025 will be the beginning of a recovery for the hotel industry in Chiapas, highlighting that security in the state has improved.
