The Secretariat of People’s Security stated that with the arrest of Ataulfo López Flores, alias “El Mango,” it dismantled the “Chiapas Guatemala Cartel” criminal group, which had plagued the Frailesca, Sierra, central, and border regions of Chiapas with murders, disappearances, extortion, and extortion charges, and was fighting for territory with other organized crime gangs.
Óscar Alberto Aparicio Avendaño, head of the agency, reported at a press conference that “El Mango” was the leader of the “Chiapas Guatemala Cartel” cell and was the one who ordered the mass murder of 19 hitmen who were found in a torton truck last July in the municipality of La Concordia.
“El Mango” is also the mastermind behind the December 2023 attack on singer Julión Álvarez’s ranch in the Benito Juárez community, La Concordia municipality, the official said at a press conference.
Accompanied by Attorney General Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca and military commanders from the 20th Infantry Battalion and the 31st Military Zone, the security chief stated that with the arrest of “El Mango,” his son Iván “N,” and Carlos “N,” alias “El Charmín,” and the plaza boss of the same cartel in the municipality of Jiquipilas, Marco Antonio “N” “La Chacuala,” the “Chiapas Guatemala Cartel” criminal group, which had plagued the region with extortion and extortion rackets, was dismantled.
He pointed out that security forces are not just attacking one criminal group, but all of them. Proof of this is the arrest in the municipality of Chilón of Joaquín Arturo “N,” alias “El Chorizo,” brother-in-law of local PVEM deputy Juan Manuel Utrilla. He was arrested following a complaint about extortion, and his accomplice was detained. “El Chorizo,” he threatened the state police and warned that a commando would rescue his accomplice, so we mounted an operation to arrest him for homicide,” added Aparicio Avendaño.
Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca, the state’s Attorney General, explained that during the armed attack on the family of the regional Mexican singer, which occurred on December 29, 2023, ranch workers and Julión Álvarez’s brother were kidnapped. “There is a complaint filed in December 2023.”
During the operation that took place on Thursday, April 9, in the municipality of Cintalapa, Ataulfo “N,” the mastermind behind the armed attack on Julión Álvarez’s property, was arrested. Two men were also arrested, including two others who participated in the shooting and kidnapping of the workers and a brother of the singer, Llaven Abarca indicated.
Two of those arrested who participated in the armed confrontation and kidnapping are Carlos “N,” “El Charmín,” and Oliver “N,” but in the case of Ataulfo ”N,” according to the investigation file, he is the mastermind of the events. “Although he was not present, he was the mastermind behind this attempt to deprive a relative of singer Julión Álvarez of his liberty,” the official stated.
On December 29, Julión Álvarez had arrived in Chiapas to spend the holidays with his family at his property in the community of Benito Juárez, municipality of La Concordia.
After the attack, which left three people dead, the singer requested support from the Mexican Army and Navy, who were in the area. A two-hour chase and operation rescued Julión’s brother and some of his workers, but some people died during the confrontation, said the Prosecutor, who did not elaborate further on the incident.
Llaven Abarca added that Ataulfo ”N” has several investigation files for homicide, extortion, forced disappearance of persons, and other crimes. “There are several investigation files on these individuals for violence in that region,” he stated.
