A group of seven Cubans, including a minor, were rescued during a search of a property in Tapachula, Chiapas, where they were victims of extortion.
Members of the Mexican Army, Navy, National Guard, National Migration Institute, and the State Attorney General’s Office implemented an operation to free the foreigners, who were being held in the city center.
According to investigations, the alleged criminals demanded payment of $10,000 (approximately 200,000 Mexican pesos) each from the victims and their families to release them and allow them to continue their journey through Mexico.
The Attorney General’s Office reported in a statement that, at the time of the security forces’ intervention, the Cubans (three women, three men, and a minor) were abandoned.
“The group of people in the mobility situation was transferred to the facilities of the Prosecutor’s Office for specialized care and to obtain their statements,” the institution stated.
It added that an investigation has been opened for these events against whoever is found responsible.
