Four Tzotzil women were imprisoned in the El Pozo community of San Juan Chamula for refusing to donate land containing a spring, which for years has been used to supply water to the community of just over 2,500 inhabitants.

Community authorities detained the women, one of whom was breastfeeding a newborn, and then took them to the community prison, where they remained Thursday afternoon.

The women’s identities are unknown, but this afternoon, some of their children visited the prison to be with them.
