In the municipality of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, a bridge collapsed due to softening of the ground caused by heavy rains in the region. A video of the moment the structure collapsed, just before a person crossed, is circulating on social media.

On Friday, September 18, a bridge over a stream collapsed in San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the Maravilla neighborhood. The cause of the accident was soil moisture from constant rains and a lack of support for the structure.

The video shows that the structure collapsed moments before a person crossed; it also shows a vehicle behind it, which had to turn around and find another route. The footage shows that no one was injured.

Witnesses told the local press that the bridge was used daily by residents of the Maravilla and El Vergel neighborhoods, so municipal authorities are being asked to cordon off the area to prevent accidents while a new bridge is being built.

Civil Protection and Municipal Traffic Departments responded to the scene to assess the situation.
