The passenger service on Line K of the Interoceanic Railway, connecting Chiapas with Oaxaca, aims to strengthen connectivity in southeastern Mexico.
The Tonalá and Arriaga stations, corresponding to section 1 of Line K of the Interoceanic Railway in Chiapas, were inaugurated. Starting today, passenger train service will be available to Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca. This event marks another step in the reactivation of the railway network in southeastern Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo led the inauguration ceremony in Tonalá, where the ribbon was cut and a commemorative plaque was unveiled. Later, in Arriaga, she toured the Linear Park and confirmed that passengers can purchase tickets starting this Saturday, November 22, to travel between these stations and extend their journey to Ixtepec.
The federal government has announced the future expansion of this line, which will connect Tonalá to Ciudad Hidalgo, on the border with Guatemala, passing through key points such as Huixtla. This route is part of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, an infrastructure project promoted by the federal government for the logistical and economic development of the region.
The Interoceanic Railway is a key initiative for Mexico’s regional development, seeking to revitalize freight and passenger transport in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Its main objective is to establish a competitive multimodal corridor that boosts trade and the economy, as well as connectivity for the inhabitants of the states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. Line K, in particular, is vital for connectivity in the southeast, facilitating the transit of people and goods to the southern border.
At the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Sheinbaum Pardo was accompanied by members of her Cabinet, as well as the governors of Chiapas, Eduardo Ramírez, and Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz. The work of the Mexican Navy in bringing this project to fruition was acknowledged.
The K Line of the Interoceanic Railway is structured in three main sections: the first, from Ciudad Ixtepec to Tonalá; the second, from Tonalá to Huixtla; and the third, from Huixtla to Ciudad Hidalgo. It also includes the KA section, which runs from Los Toros to Puerto Chiapas.
