Armed attack leaves commander seriously injured in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas

A municipal police officer in San Cristóbal de las Casas was seriously wounded after being shot, an incident that triggered a security operation and mobilized emergency services throughout the city.

According to preliminary information, the officer, identified as Adonai N., was attacked from behind by a man riding a motorcycle in the Santa Lucía neighborhood.

After the attack, the assailant fled, abandoning the motorcycle and a helmet, which were seized by authorities as evidence for the investigation.

The officer suffered a gunshot wound that punctured a lung, and he was immediately transported to a hospital, where his condition was reported as critical.

The mayor of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Fabiola Ricci Diestel, condemned the armed attack against the municipal police commander, which occurred after he finished his shift, and assured that the incident will not halt security efforts in the municipality.

In a video message posted on her social media accounts, the mayor absolutely rejected any act of violence and affirmed that the local government will reinforce its strategies to preserve security.

“What happened today (…) will not stop us; we will redouble our efforts to ensure that peace in San Cristóbal de Las Casas is firm and permanent,” she stated.

Ricci Diestel reported that the State Attorney General’s Office is already investigating the case and thanked Attorney General Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca, who, she said, is leading the corresponding investigations.

She added that the municipality will continue to be protected by the police force.

The mayor maintained that, according to the information available so far, the attack appears to be related to a personal security matter and emphasized that it is being handled according to the law.

We will not allow violence to become normalized.

Finally, she reiterated her commitment to working permanently for the peace and tranquility of the municipality and indicated that she would keep the population informed as the investigations progressed.
