Chiapas Attorney General’s Office official found dead

Fátima Maldonado Martínez, an official with the Chiapas Selva District Attorney’s Office, was found dead in her home in the municipality of Ocosingo.

However, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) initially ruled out murder, let alone femicide, a conclusion that contradicts the opinion of the National Collective 50+1, which considers her the first victim of femicide in the state this year.

Fátima Maldonado worked as the personal secretary to the deputy director of Preliminary Investigations for the Selva region.

Tip: The 50+1 Collective warned that Ocosingo is a hotspot for violence against women. They demanded an investigation, the implementation of a femicide protocol, and punishment for those responsible.

Her body was found Saturday night by neighbors, who alerted the authorities. Members of the State Guard (GE) and the municipal police arrived at the scene to secure the area.

Forensic experts and agents from the Public Prosecutor’s Office also carried out the corresponding procedures and transferred the body to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo).

The Chiapas State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reported that it opened an investigation file “in strict adherence to the Protocol for Action with a Gender Perspective for the Investigation of the Crime of Femicide.”

However, after the legal autopsy, it was determined that the cause of death was “mechanical asphyxiation by hanging (self-inflicted injury).” The forensic report established that the body showed no signs of external violence, defensive wounds, or evidence suggesting the involvement of third parties in the incident.

Nevertheless, the FGE stated that the investigation continues, including the review of video surveillance footage and field investigations, to further the relevant procedures and clarify the facts.

For the 50+1 Collective, 2026 has barely begun and “femicidal violence has once again plunged a Chiapas family into mourning and offended the entire society,” which is why they demanded a swift investigation from the authorities to find those responsible.
