Festival of Saint Anthony Abbot in the heart of Chiapas

106

Every January, faith and tradition come alive in Chiapas with the celebration of Saint Anthony the Abbot, one of the saints venerated during the Fiesta Grande of Chiapa de Corzo, but also honored in various municipalities throughout the state.

His image is carried through streets filled with color, amidst prayers, music, and the aroma of incense, as part of a popular religiosity passed down through generations.

Saint Anthony the Abbot is considered one of the fathers of Christian monasticism. His life of seclusion, prayer, and service made him a symbol of humility and protection, especially for animals and families who depend on agriculture.

Although in Chiapa de Corzo his feast day is part of the traditional Fiesta Grande calendar, devotion to him extends to other municipalities in Chiapas, where entire communities keep the tradition alive with masses, processions, and popular celebrations.
