On Monday morning, a confrontation occurred on the Suchiate River, known as the Armadillo crossing, after rafters attempted to smuggle drums of gasoline into Mexico. A Navy unit was already waiting on the Mexican side and positioned itself to prevent the fuel from crossing.
The incident generated tension in the border area, where there were exchanges of accusations between civilians and federal agents. The presence of security forces halted the smuggling attempt at one of the most frequently used points for the irregular passage of goods.
Faced with the intervention, the rafters opted to return with the drums to the Guatemalan side, preventing the product from entering the country. This action is part of the operations to reinforce security along this border region of Chiapas.
