In recent years, ecotourism has gained significant traction among a population tired of the city routine, seeking recreation and contact with nature. In this regard, San Cristóbal offers a wide variety of ecotourism parks to enjoy during these days off. Cuarto Poder presents five of these destinations for you to explore.
Arcotete
Located eight kilometers from San Cristóbal de Las Casas on the road to Tenejapa, the El Arcotete tourist park offers both tranquility and activities for the more adventurous. The entrance fee is 15 pesos, and you can arrive by car or on the shared taxis that depart from the José Castillo Tielemans market. Once inside, you can enjoy the Mammoth Caves for an additional 20 pesos, as well as zip-lining and boat trips on the river.
Montetik
If hiking is your thing, Montetik offers the opportunity just six kilometers from the city. One of the biggest attractions of this ecological park, a community reserve south of San Cristóbal, is the abundance of bromeliads and birds that can be observed during a walk. The cost per person is 50 pesos.
Moxviquil
For plant lovers, Moxviquil offers a nursery with a surprising variety of plant species. With an entrance fee of 10 pesos for locals, 15 for Mexicans, and 50 for foreigners, this reserve, which covers more than four hectares, allows visitors to explore the ecosystem of the northern part of San Cristóbal, located a few meters from the Ojo de Agua neighborhood.
El Encuentro
For outdoor cycling, El Encuentro Park is one of the best options in San Cristóbal. There is a symbolic entrance fee of 10 pesos. In addition to offering great views, the park also provides parking and a picnic area. To get there, take the ring road from the Conalep school.
Bishop’s Estate
To appreciate the harmony between nature and old buildings, you’ll find Bishop’s Estate, which has an entrance fee of 10 pesos. It’s a favorite spot not only for picnics but also for photo shoots.
