More than a month after the alleged poisoning of dogs in the community of Zacualpa Ecatepec, in the municipality of San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the Chiapas Highlands region, animal rights activists condemned the incident and demanded that the relevant authorities launch an investigation. They also called on the public to report animal abuse, as Chiapas has legislation protecting animals.
In an interview, Celeste Coello Armas, an animal rights activist in the colonial city, condemned the recent events, in which at least seven dogs were found dead in the community of Zacualpa, allegedly poisoned. She urged citizens to file reports with the Attorney General’s Office so that a prosecutor can initiate the corresponding investigations.
“We strongly condemn the alleged poisoning of at least seven dogs in the community of Zacualpa Ecatepec, in San Cristóbal. This act constitutes a serious offense that may be classified as animal cruelty, according to the Chiapas State Penal Code, which punishes the killing and intentional harm of animals. We urge the public to report whoever is responsible; these crimes are prosecuted ex officio. It is important to go to the Prosecutor’s Office so that the authorities can take action. As citizens, we must get involved, and the authorities have an obligation to investigate,” stated Coello Armas.
Finally, he called on the authorities to pay attention to what is happening in both San Cristóbal de las Casas and San Juan Chamula, where it is estimated that more than 15 dogs have been poisoned. “Unfortunately, there is no Environmental Prosecutor’s Office in San Cristóbal, but you can file a complaint with this institution. You can also go to Municipal Public Services so they can intervene and investigate the case,” he concluded.
