Chiapas Is Not Off the Cinematic Map
In recent years, the state has positioned itself among the entities with the highest film production in Mexico, with works that have even received recognition outside the state. The problem is that producing them does not necessarily mean having local resources to do so.
For those working in this sector, one of the main limitations is precisely financing. Chiapas currently does not have an institutionalized state agency that provides support for developing film projects, so filmmakers must mainly turn to federal calls for proposals, funds, or private sponsorship.
Amid these shortcomings, the sector is also seeking to create its own alternatives. The goal is for companies, organizations, and society to become involved in a creative industry that is already producing, but needs spaces to circulate, connect with audiences, and continue growing.
And precisely as a response to this lack of exhibition spaces, Malacate, the Chiapas Film Festival, was created. Its first edition will take place in November. The program will bring together around nine feature films, short films, and different themes, in a tour through cultural spaces in Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Rather than creating cinema from scratch, the festival seeks to bring existing productions before the public.
