San Cristobal de Las Casas-. In the first four months of 2022, in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas , the theft of 29 motorcycles was criminally reported , while in Tuxtla Gutiérrez the complaints barely totaled seven.
According to data from the Chiapas Citizen Observatory , this means that theft in this magical town is four times higher than in the state capital, despite having a third of the population of the capital of Chiapas.
The agency highlighted that from January to May, 1,326 complaints of drug dealing were registered in the entity, while in San Cristóbal de Las Casas the registry of folders for this crime went from 29 in all of 2021 to 65 during the first four months of 2022.
We place special emphasis on the analysis of the crimes of drug dealing and vehicle theft, after the events that occurred on June 14 in San Cristóbal de las Casas… we again call on the state and municipal authorities responsible for the security of the population of Chiapas and San Cristobal to the use of data for decision-making in matters of public security policies”, points out the Observatory
Statistics reveal that last year motorcycle theft in Chiapas represented 48% of all open investigation files; in San Cristóbal de las Casas investigations represent 45% of the total.
In the case of drug dealing, in the first four months of this year it is six times higher than the total figure for 2021.
In San Cristóbal de las Casas, most motorcycles circulate without license plates. It is estimated that on the streets and avenues of that municipality there are at least 1,500 units of this type without registration.
SCOOTER GANGS
Los Motonetos are a gang that for some years has spread terror in the region through assaults, robberies, executions, use of long weapons and extortion, among other crimes.
The Motonetos run through the streets of San Cristóbal at full speed, carrying long weapons and constantly firing shots into the air in full view of everyone.
In a 15-second video that circulates on social networks, it is observed how a subject, among a group of young people on motorcycles, repeatedly detonates his long weapon.
Just on June 14, dozens of armed individuals -most of them hooded- “walked” through the streets and avenues of San Cristóbal de las Casas and carried out detonations with large-caliber firearms.
The conflict was over control of the North Market, where the members of Los Motonetos meet.
Since noon, hundreds of people posted on social networks the panic that exists in this Magical Town and showed that, thanks to the owners of some businesses, such as hotels and restaurants, they took refuge so as not to be victims of violence.
Similarly, videos circulated of people who remain crouched in different places. “Right now, we are in the North Zone Health Center, lying on the floor, because intense high-caliber bursts are heard… insecurity is becoming more terrible every day,” a woman is heard saying, as record how everyone is “pechoterre”.
