Jerónimo Ruiz, leader of the Mercado Santo Domingo artisans, was shot to death in the streets of the Nueva Esperanza neighborhood in the northern area of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas.

Preliminary reports indicate that El Artesano, as he was known, was attacked by two men on a motorcycle as he was about to get into his red Volkswagen Golf.

The man appeared to have been shot at least three times. Subsequently, the victim was taken to the nearest hospital, however he no longer had vital signs.

El Artesano, together with his cousin Narciso Ruiz, allegedly led the social organization ALMETRACH in the Los Altos region, as well as a group of scooters called Los Jerónimos.

After the murder, basic education schools suspended classes and asked parents to go to these educational centers to pick up their children.
