This April 25, members of the National Army arrived in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, to try to control the levels of violence due to the confrontation that occurred last week. Operations will continue 24 hours a day.
60 strategic points were located by the Army, last Sunday April 23 in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas.
It is now more than 36 hours that elements of the Army have fulfilled security control.
During this period, more than 260 vehicles and motorcycles have been checked during patrols and checkpoints at various checkpoints.
The 60 strategic points were installed between neighborhoods, squares, commercial establishments, markets, gas stations and bank branches, where so far no incidents have occurred.

“I say that if it calms down, it will help a lot, but let’s hope that, well, my request, as well as society, is that this operation take time, because if San Cristóbal needs it, not just the market, San Cristóbal de Las Casas needs more security, we need to be well protected so that they don’t just come two or three months and leave, that this vigilance continues so that it helps us and that they see San Cristóbal, so that tourists can enter again ”. said Pedro Santiz, manager of the José Castillo Tielmans market
The population that lives in the northern area of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, where the confrontation took place on April 17, in addition to the murder of the leader of the artisans, Gerónimo Ruiz, requested that the operations to disarm the population be permanent.
“It was a very safe place here, a quiet place, but with all this about weapons and all this that is sold to anyone, well yes, anyone can get a weapon very quickly and it is always dangerous to be late, but now that with these people we feel good”.
“That the leaders of the criminal gangs that are operating with impunity be arrested.”
The operations and patrols will continue throughout the day, however, it is still unknown for how long the presence of the Army will continue to patrol the streets of San Cristóbal de Las Casas.
