The city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, which will celebrate its 500th anniversary in 2028, will celebrate San Cristóbal Mártir, its patron saint, with great color and religious fervor on July 25.

The activities will take place in its temple located on the San Cristobalito hill, located in the western part of the city. The festivities began on July 17 and will conclude on July 25.

History

The story goes that San Cristóbal Mártir carried the child Christ on his shoulders, which is why his name means bearer of Christ. He is considered the patron saint of motorists and protector of travelers.

From very early today, residents of the Santa Lucía neighborhood will carry out a pilgrimage until they reach the sanctuary of the miraculous image, carrying candles and incense in their hands, as well as singing songs during their journey.

According to tradition, days before the celebration, the authorities carry out road operations in the area of ​​the San Cristóbal hill, so that motorists can access more easily and free of any congestion that could generate negative situations.
