Teopisca-San Cristóbal Highway Reopens After Month-Long Closure

After 29 days of closure due to a landslide on October 15 at kilometer 107 near the Nuevo Jardín El Edén community in Teopisca, the federal highway connecting Teopisca with San Cristóbal de las Casas has been fully cleared. Both lanes are now open, allowing motorists to travel normally on this crucial route.

The landslide caused significant unrest among residents and drivers. The removal work, carried out by two machines, was slow, with work often suspended in the afternoons, delaying progress. Some drivers had to wait up to two hours to continue their journey, while public transport users walked up to a kilometer to board another vehicle to San Cristóbal or Teopisca.

As part of the rehabilitation efforts, the road was washed with water and detergent to remove the tons of earth from the landslide, ensuring it was completely clean to prevent future accidents. Since Tuesday morning, private vehicles, transporters, and large trucks have been circulating normally on the highway. However, the National Guard Division of Roads and Civil Protection has urged motorists to drive with caution, respect speed limits, speed bumps, installed vibrators, and traffic signs to avoid accidents.

Transporters have noted that some minor work is still pending in the area, but it does not affect vehicular traffic. “Fortunately, the two lanes are now free after being closed for almost a month. It affected us a lot economically because sometimes there was no traffic. Now it is free, there is normal traffic in the two lanes, the work continues, but there are no risks, it does not affect motorists,” they commented.
