In an operation that lasted 48 hours, the authorities managed to arrest Diego “N”, better known by his alias “La Rata Gorda”, alleged leader of the criminal group called “Los Motonetos”.
The capture, carried out in the northern area of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, was the result of coordinated work between the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the Secretariat of People’s Security, the Pakal Immediate Reaction Force and the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), who indicated that the detainee is one of the main responsible for the acts of violence in the region.
According to the FGE, Diego “N” faces charges for attacking the peace and physical and property integrity of the community and the state, and his name has been linked to various criminal acts that have sown fear in the inhabitants of one of the cities most affected by the activity of the group “Los Motonetos”.
The accused is currently in custody and his legal status will be determined in the coming days.
The capture of “La Rata Gorda”, who was considered one of the main generators of violence in the region, is seen by the authorities as an important step in the fight against organized crime in Chiapas. During the announcement of the operation, the authorities reaffirmed their commitment to continue implementing joint actions to restore peace and security in San Cristóbal de Las Casas.
Who are “Los Motonetos”?
The criminal group known as “Los Motonetos” has gained notoriety in the Altos region of Chiapas for its involvement in acts of violence, drug dealing, homicides and other illicit activities.
For years, this organization has been a key factor in the increase in insecurity in municipalities such as San Cristóbal de Las Casas, where its members are known for operating on motorcycles, using this means as an agile means of transportation to carry out their crimes.
According to investigations by the FGE and journalistic reports, this criminal group has been linked to activities that go beyond common crimes. It is presumed that the group is also used as a “shock group” by political organizations and individuals to generate social pressure, carry out blockades and demand the release of detained members.
One of the most alarming characteristics of the group is that, according to the InSight Crime portal, they have begun to recruit young people from nearby indigenous communities, increasing the base of operations and extending their influence in rural and urban areas.

Recent blows against “Los Motonetos”
The capture of Diego “N”, alias “La Rata Gorda”, is not the first significant blow that the authorities have dealt to the criminal group. Just on January 12, 2025, the security forces arrested David “N”, another alleged leader of the organization, accused of various crimes, including acts of violence and attacks against public peace.
The events that led to the arrest of David “N” occurred in September 2023, when he and other members of “Los Motonetos” fired shots into the air on San Martín Street, north of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, generating panic among the inhabitants. After a series of investigations, the authorities managed to identify him as one of the leaders of the organization and executed his capture.
Similarly, in 2022, another alleged leader of the group, identified as Pablo “N”, was arrested after being accused of homicide. According to investigations, in February 2021, this individual shot a person in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, causing his death. This arrest sparked blockades and riots organized by members of “Los Motonetos”, who tried to exert pressure to obtain his release.
