On Tuesday afternoon, an unusual meteorological phenomenon caused alarm among residents of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, after a small tornado formed in various parts of the city.
Witnesses captured on video the moment the first tornado developed on Salomón González Blanco Street, near the area known as El Tívoli, near the José Castillo Tielemans public market, and later on Aguascalientes Street in the San Ramón neighborhood.
According to local residents, the strong gusts of wind caused sheeting to fall off homes and businesses. Although no injuries or serious property damage were reported, the phenomenon caused panic among some residents.
As of press time, Civil Protection authorities had not issued an official report on the event. However, the public is urged to remain alert for possible sudden changes in weather conditions.
