A tense standoff between security forces and suspected members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel ended in bloodshed on Sunday in southern Mexico’s Chiapas state, just days after an ambush claimed the lives of five police officers in the same area.

According to local authorities, four cartel suspects were killed during a pursuit in Frontera Comalapa, a municipality that borders Guatemala. The security forces had been attacked while on patrol when they responded with force, ultimately killing the suspects.

The incident has raised concerns about the ongoing struggle against organized crime in Mexico. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is considered one of the most powerful and violent groups operating in the country.

In a statement, the Chiapas Security Secretariat confirmed that authorities had seized four trucks, three AK-47 long guns, and other weapons from the scene. Local media reported that security forces may have briefly entered Guatemalan territory during the pursuit, but officials insisted that the operation took place entirely within Mexico.

The confrontation comes just days after five state police officers were killed in an ambush by an armed group in Frontera Comalapa. Authorities had arrested a suspect in connection with those murders and vowed to continue their efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.

Criminal violence remains a major concern in Mexico, where it has claimed over 480,000 lives since 2006 and left more than 120,000 people missing. The ongoing struggle against organized crime continues to pose significant challenges for the country’s security forces.
