With a message of identity, unity, and community pride, the “Hands That Weave History” project was presented. This moving initiative brought together more than 50 women weavers to create a monumental crochet rug, installed in one of the main walkways of San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

The project was inspired by the mayor, Fabiola Ricci Diestel, and promoted by the Municipal DIF System. During her speech, the mayor emphasized the teamwork achieved, the women who were part of this project, and the various municipal departments that collaborated:

“Today is a very important moment. This HANDS THAT WEAVE HISTORY project was born from the inspiration of each visit to communities, neighborhoods, and neighborhoods in our city. It was a challenge, but with the help of my mother and the women who are full of talent, dedication, and love for our city, the goal was achieved.”

During the event, the honorary president of the Municipal DIF, Bertha Guadalupe Diestel Alfaro, emphasized with firmness and emotion:

“Today we recognize the women who, with needle and thread, build memory, identity, and community. This rug not only adorns our streets, it also interweaves the stories of those who, day after day, sustain the living culture of San Cristóbal with their hands.”

This collective work is a tribute to the textile tradition of Chiapas, to the work of women, and to the value of community art as a form of expression, encounter, and social transformation. The installation was supported by the municipal departments of Civil Protection, Ecology, SAPAM, Public Lighting, and the Municipal DIF, who joined forces to make it possible.

Likewise, Julia Medina, representing the weavers, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to be part of this project that beautifies and gives identity to our great municipality, where art and culture will be captured.

Attending the event were: the head of the National Institute of Federalism and Municipal Development, Armando Quintero Martínez; the Undersecretary of Tourism of the State of Chiapas, Zita Rousarova Hegrova; the Director of the DIF, Susana Paola García Poo; the President of the Volunteer Program, Silvia Ricci Diestel; councilors and directors of the Honorable City Council; the participating weavers; members of the Gold Club; and the general public.

From the San Cristóbal de Las Casas Municipal DIF, we reaffirm our commitment to cultural expressions that dignify, unite, and transform, always united to transform lives.
