On the afternoon of Saturday, August 9, 2025, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake was recorded in the municipality of Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas.
The National Seismological Service (SSM) reported that the earthquake had its epicenter 139 kilometers southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo and occurred at 2:41 p.m. that day.
“EARTHQUAKE Magnitude 6.0 Loc 139 km SOUTHWEST of CD HIDALGO, CHIS 09/08/25 14:41:00 Lat 13.50 Lon -92.60 Pf 38 km,” it stated.
Due to its distance and magnitude, the earthquake did not require the activation of the Mexican Seismic Alert System (SASMEX) seismic alert in Mexico City.
Earthquake recorded on Chiapas border with Guatemala
The Chiapas Civil Protection Secretariat reported the activation of the monitoring protocol in various regions of the state due to this afternoon’s earthquake.
It stated that no damage or injuries were reported, and noted that it was initially estimated to have a magnitude of 5.6.
In a message on social media, it explained that preventive patrols are being conducted in the capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
“As part of the #Earthquake protocol, a preventive patrol is being conducted in various parts of the capital city by the Immediate Response Team (ERI),” reads a message on X.
On its Facebook account, the state Civil Protection Secretariat shared photographs of its personnel’s patrols in Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology of Guatemala maintained the earthquake’s intensity at 5.8, with its epicenter located near the border with Chiapas.
According to the Guatemalan government’s instrumental intensity map, the earthquake felt very weak, and was most intense in the border area with Chiapas. In Tabasco, the quake was barely felt or had no movement to report.
