In different regions of Chiapas, humanitarian assistance efforts have begun for people affected by the rains of Tropical Wave 33 in the state.

Work Begins to Open Roads Closed by Landslides
In municipalities of the Sierra de Chiapas, the removal of debris, earth, and mud that had blocked access to several rural roads and prevented humanitarian aid from reaching them began.

In the coastal area of Chiapas, community assistance efforts began systematically, as it had not been possible to access the affected population to assist them.

In recent hours, roads that were closed by landslides have been opened, and the rains have stopped, allowing the arrival of emergency personnel.

Student Assistance Protocol

In the Costa Rica ejido (common land) of the Mapastepec municipality, following reports that a school had been damaged after a hill collapsed and buried a large part of a classroom, education authorities reported that they have initiated an assistance protocol for students.

Parents and ejido authorities managed to salvage some of the few classroom utensils that remained, so they will ensure that students receive classes in alternate classrooms.

Members of the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry have joined forces to rebuild roads and bridges, working to open up the areas affected by the rains.

“There are other roads being worked on, especially in the mountains, in the upper part of Escuintla, in the area from Belisario Domínguez toward Motozintla, and the lower part of Mapastepec, which has been affected,” said Rogelio Tamayo of the Chiapas CMIC.

Roads are expected to be fully reopened in the coming days, while an assessment is conducted to determine the damage caused by these rains and how to provide assistance to the affected population. Meanwhile, some schools in these regions that sustained damage will remain closed until further notice.
