Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca, Attorney General of the State of Chiapas (FGE), announced the arrest of Héctor “N,” also known as “El Chesman,” who is allegedly involved in the murder of Parish Priest Marcelo Pérez in October 2024, in San Cristóbal de las Casas.
The arrest of the accused was thanks to various intelligence efforts by the Investigation and Ministerial Agency, in conjunction with the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP).
According to the head of the FGE, the suspect is identified as the criminal leader of a group generating violence in San Cristóbal de las Casas: “This group calls itself Los Motonetos, who in recent months or years has been generating violence and insecurity in the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas.”
The arrest took place on October 22nd for the crimes of gang membership, attacks on the peace, and the physical and property integrity of the state.
Once secured by the authorities, “El Chesman” will be held in a regional prison, where he will remain at the disposal of the judicial body.
“El Chesman” is linked to the unfortunate events that occurred last October in the municipality of San Cristóbal de las Casas, where Parish Priest Marcelo Pérez lost his life, and for which the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has an investigation file,” Llaven Abarca explained.
So far, collaborative efforts have been established with the FGR and the FGE to execute the arrest warrant for aggravated homicide.
The events occurred on the morning of Sunday, October 20, 2024, in San Cristóbal de las Casas, when the priest was shot inside his vehicle as he was leaving Mass at the church in the Cuxtitali neighborhood and heading to another parish.
He was intercepted by two men on a motorcycle who shot him at point-blank range, killing him. Security cameras captured the moment of the attack.
Father Marcelo Pérez Pérez was a Tsotsil Mayan priest of indigenous origin, well known for his profound social activism in defense of the rights of indigenous peoples and peace in the Chiapas region. He had mediated in violent conflicts, such as the one in Pantelhó, and was an outspoken critic of the actions of armed groups and organized crime in the area.
