Christmas is coming early to San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the Highlands of Chiapas. Throughout December 2025 and part of January 2026, the historic center will be adorned with thousands of colorful lights, attracting tourists. Many people will spend Christmas in the city, enjoying its cuisine, its tile-roofed streets, its friendly people, and, above all, the low temperatures that can reach as low as 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

This Friday night, San Cristóbal de las Casas is illuminated with thousands of lights of various colors and sizes, installed along the El Carmen, Santo Domingo, and Guadalupe pedestrian walkways. They will remain like this throughout the winter holiday season. In December and part of January 2026, thousands of national and international tourists will arrive to enjoy the most magical of the “Pueblos Mágicos” (Magical Towns).

The central park is also illuminated, as are the facades of the San Cristóbal Museum (MUSAC), restaurants, hotels, and adobe houses. Starting on the evening of November 28th, more than 3,000 people, including locals and visitors, flocked to the city center to take photos, despite the temperature dropping to 9 degrees Celsius (48 degrees Fahrenheit).

This lighting display was organized by local businesses, hoteliers, restaurateurs, and authorities. As a result, the historic center of San Cristóbal is ablaze with color. The streets will remain illuminated throughout the end of November and into December, while businesses continue to promote the city worldwide, given that San Cristóbal is a tourist destination located approximately 2,200 meters (7,500 feet) above sea level.
