The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), headed by Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, reports that the modernization and expansion of the Tuxtla Gutiérrez–San Cristóbal de las Casas highway directly benefits one million residents of six municipalities and 50 communities in Chiapas.

The project, completed last December, involved widening a 29.2-kilometer stretch to three lanes, improving road safety and reducing travel times. More than 12,000 vehicles use this highway daily.

The work carried out included:

  • Widening of seven underpasses
  • Modernization of three runaway truck ramps, with the installation of lighting and video surveillance along more than 300 meters
  • Widening of four bridges
  • Handling of more than 150,000 cubic meters of material on the slopes

The project involved 400 workers, used more than 13,000 cubic meters of hydraulic concrete, 39,000 cubic meters of asphalt pavement, and 913 tons of steel; in addition, 4,234 direct jobs were created during its development.

The modernization of this highway, with an investment of 1.045 billion pesos, is part of the 2025–2030 National Highway Infrastructure Program, whose objective is to build, expand, and maintain a 19,240-kilometer trunk road and bridge network throughout the country.
