On Sunday evening, approximately 100 people from various organizations gathered in the Plaza Catedral of San Cristóbal de las Casas to protest the arrest of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, carried out by the United States government early Saturday morning. With banners and chants, the demonstrators demanded his immediate release.

Representatives of the participating organizations recalled that Venezuela had suffered harassment from the United States in recent days and condemned Maduro’s arrest as illegal and a kidnapping. They also demanded the immediate release of his wife, who was also arrested early Saturday morning by a U.S. elite unit and taken to New York that same day.

During the protest, the demonstrators also expressed their solidarity with Palestine, where they are demanding a ceasefire. They pointed out that, for over a year, thousands of men, women, and children have lost their lives and that millions of pesos in material damages have been incurred, including the destruction of buildings caused by the Israeli army.

Despite the low temperature of 8 degrees Celsius, the attendees remained gathered in Cathedral Square. They announced that another nationwide mobilization will take place, for which they will set a date and time and call upon various organizations across the country to demonstrate in streets, squares, and highways. The protest concluded without incident.
