After a citizen complaint from residents of the Selva Natividad 1 neighborhoodeight children were found living in a cardboard house and exposed to the low temperatures of the cold season in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas.

  • The little ones tried to warm themselves with a stove in the face of the cold to which they had been exposed. In addition, they also showed signs of dehydration and lack of food.

The minors who were helped by local authorities after the complaint of the neighbors, found themselves in precarious conditions in a house with a tin roof and cardboard walls with a dirt floor.

Paternal grandparents take care of children in their mother’s absence

Although it had been reported on social media that the eight children were abandoned, they were in the care of their paternal grandparents in the absence of their mother. However, when the authorities arrived, the minors were alone without the presence of an adult.

After the case went viral on social networks, in a video where the minors are seen alone in the aforementioned conditions, the Government of San Cristóbal de las Casas committed to building “a decent home for the eight minors who live in a situation of vulnerability in the community.”

The municipal government will build them a house

After making a visit and verifying the conditions in which the children lived, currently under the protection of their paternal grandparents, the mayor instructed that as of this Wednesday, February 11, the construction work of the house for the children begins, in coordination with the Municipal DIF and the Secretariat of Humanism of the Government of Chiapas.

In addition to improving their living conditions, local authorities reported that they will work together to get children back to school, strengthen their family nucleus, and provide them with comprehensive care without separating them from their grandparents. Among them is his grandfather, Juan Pérez Jolote, who has committed to ensuring his care.

The Municipal DIF of San Cristóbal provided care to the minors with mats, blankets, food support, toys, and medical and psychological care, and will provide permanent follow-up to guarantee the well-being and respect of the children.
