MCV: Chiapas, the poorest state in the country in the first quarter of 2026

According to studies conducted by México Cómo Vamos, during the first quarter of 2026, Chiapas saw an increase in its percentage of population living in poverty, leading the nation in this category.

Compared to the same period in 2025, Chiapas’s poverty rate rose from 59.2 percent to 60.8 percent this year.

The organization added that, when comparing the cost of the food and non-food basket with per capita labor income in Mexico, it was estimated that in the first quarter of 2026, 60 percent of the national population did not have sufficient income to purchase the combined cost of the food and non-food baskets.

In this regard, it specified that Chiapas is the state with the highest proportion of its population (83.7%) lacking sufficient income to cover the combined cost of the food and non-food baskets.

In its May 27 publication, México Cómo Vamos also explained that in terms of informal employment at the state level, Chiapas ranks among the three entities with the highest rate, registering a percentage of 75.3 percent.
