Accompanied by traditional confectioners and members of the City Council, Mayor Fabiola Ricci Diestel presided over the opening of the Corpus Christi Traditional Sweets Expo, set up in the corridors of the San Cristóbal Museum (MUSAC)—an event representing one of the city’s most significant cultural expressions.

In her remarks, the mayor acknowledged the work of the families dedicated to making traditional sweets, noting that they have preserved this cultural heritage for over five decades. She highlighted how their work keeps alive the customs that define the identity of San Cristóbal de Las Casas and strengthens the sense of belonging among younger generations.

Speaking on behalf of the artisans, María Eugenia Montes Urbina expressed gratitude for the City Council’s support and emphasized the importance of continuing to promote this tradition to ensure its survival. She also highlighted the involvement of younger generations in the craft, which ensures the continuity of an activity that is emblematic of the municipality.

Meanwhile, Lino David Ballinas Mijangos, the spokesperson for the confectioners, acknowledged the institutional support provided to promote and showcase the sector’s work. He noted that traditional festivities are a fundamental part of the local identity—known as coleta—and invited residents and visitors alike to purchase local products, encouraging them to value the artisanal effort behind every sweet made in San Cristóbal.
