Authorities Identify 90 Critical Waterway Risk Points as Chiapas Activates Interagency Command Center for the 2026 Rainy Season

Authorities have identified 90 critical points in rivers and waterways as they activated the Interagency Command Center in response to the imminent impact of the rainy season and a period of contrasting weather conditions across the state.

National Civil Protection Coordinator Laura Velázquez Alzúa led the installation of the Interagency Command Center for the 2026 Rainy Season and Tropical Cyclones in Chiapas, aiming to strengthen emergency prevention and response efforts through coordination among the three levels of government.

She highlighted that 58 of the state’s 124 municipalities face medium to very high flood risk due to Chiapas’ geographical characteristics, including:

  • Extensive mountainous areas.
  • Heavy rainfall.
  • Numerous rivers and hydrological basins.

Several Regions in Chiapas Face Flood Risk

Velázquez stated that 17 municipalities are classified as having a very high flood risk, while several others face high and medium levels of risk, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring.

She explained that authorities have identified 90 critical flood-prone locations across 52 bodies of water, primarily in the Northern, Grijalva, and Isthmus-Costa regions. Among the municipalities with the highest concentration of vulnerable areas are Tapachula and Tuxtla Gutiérrez, where constant monitoring is being maintained.

Governor Highlights Prevention Measures

Chiapas Governor Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar emphasized that disaster prevention is a priority for his administration and highlighted the progress of the micro-watershed restoration program, which is designed to reduce the risks of flooding and heavy rainfall.

He added that Chiapas has:

  • 516 temporary shelters available for emergencies.
  • Specialized machinery for disaster response.
  • A permanent program for cleaning drainage systems, rehabilitating bridges, and maintaining public infrastructure.

Weather Forecast for Chiapas on Thursday, June 25

Weather conditions across Chiapas on Thursday will be influenced by three main factors:

Due to the passage of a tropical wave through southeastern Mexico, showers with locally heavy rainfall are expected, particularly across the southern region of Chiapas. These storms may be accompanied by lightning.

Despite the rainfall forecast, daytime temperatures will remain very hot, with maximum temperatures ranging between 35°C and 40°C (95°F to 104°F) in several parts of the state.

Along the Chiapas coastline, hazardous conditions are also expected. Wind gusts could reach 40 to 60 km/h (25 to 37 mph). In addition, a long-period swell (mar de fondo) is forecast, producing waves between 1.0 and 2.0 meters (3.3 to 6.6 feet) high.
