The National Seismological Service (SSN) reported that as of 1:00 PM, 91 aftershocks had been recorded following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake with its epicenter in Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas.
Through its social media channels, the SSN indicated that the strongest aftershock was magnitude 6.5.
The earthquake occurred at 8:48:41 AM on July 17th and had its epicenter 95 kilometers from Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, at a depth of 10 kilometers. It resulted in one death.

It should be noted that aftershocks occur when rocks readjust after a significant earthquake. This generates a series of tremors in the area.
“The number of aftershocks can vary from a few to hundreds of events in the days or weeks following the main earthquake,” the Seismological Service explains.
