Labor poverty in Chiapas decreased during the second quarter of 2026, but it still affected 59.8% of the population, practically six out of every 10 inhabitants, according to the Inegi. This means that their labor income was insufficient to purchase the basic food basket.
The indicator fell 2.7 percentage points compared with the same period in 2025, when it reached 62.5%, and decreased one percentage point compared with the first quarter of 2026. However, Chiapas remained 27.9 percentage points above the national average, which stood at 31.9%.
Average Income and Gender Inequality in the Chiapas Labor Market
The real labor income per person increased 8% year over year, rising from 1,690.60 to 1,825.99 pesos. Despite the improvement, this represented only half of the national average, which was 3,655.63 pesos.
The improvement was also not the same for both sexes: the average income of employed men increased 13.7%, while the income of women decreased 4%.
Ten of the 11 economic sectors reported increases; the only sectors that declined were the extractive industry and electricity.
In total, the labor income of the employed population in Chiapas reached 10,633.84 million pesos, 6.9% more than a year earlier.
Although there is a downward trend, the state has still not returned to its most recent historical low level of 59.2%, recorded at the beginning of 2025.
