The Neighborhood Committee of the Center of San Cristóbal de Las Casas demanded that Mayor Jerónima Toledo Villalobos apply the regulation on health matters that regulates establishments with the sale of alcoholic beverages, with the aim of preventing events such as the one that occurred on Saturday when three people were shot.
In a document signed by its president Lenin Andrés Fonseca García, the Committee added: “Today we are forced to use the media to make this request publicly again since throughout his administration we have not stopped requesting his intervention by means of writings, virtual meetings, and personal encounters to regularize the hours, decibels and proliferation of this type of business that comes in excessive and irregular growth in the Historic Center of San Cristóbal de Las Casas ”.
At least three people were wounded by gunshot wounds last Saturday in the center of San Cristóbal, due to a fight between customers of one or two bars that remained open at 8:00 in the morning.
The president of the Neighbors Committee, who is also vice president of the Mexico Hotel Association, San Cristóbal Chapter, blamed the municipal president “and her dependencies, due to omission of functions due to the events that occurred on June 26 in the Historic Center, when at 8:00 in the morning the clubs were still in operation, as happens every weekend, with a large number of highly intoxicated clients and in this case armed ”.
Fonseca García told Toledo Villalobos that “although her attitude, until today, has been evasive, it does not exempt her from these obligations, since there is a regulation under her charge, which she has not enforced.”
Therefore, he remarked: “Not only do we hold her responsible for these consequences, which today leave us at least three gunshot wounds, but as long as she does not act truthfully and forcefully, she will continue to be responsible for the consequences.”
He insisted that he must “execute the current regulation on health that regulates establishments with the sale of alcoholic beverages and in which the City Council, through agreements with the Ministry of Health, is obliged to regulate and maintain the order of bars, clubs, and canteens in this city ”.
