Chiapas Catholic Church leaders are asking Pope Francis if they can include Mayan ceremonies in Catholic masses.
Mexican bishops will propose to Pope Francis to include Mayan ceremonies such as dance, music, and the participation of women in Catholic masses.
This, with the purpose of uniting the communities, “respecting their value, taking into account the culture of the native peoples,” said the Bishop of San Cristóbal, Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez.
The proposal will be the second of its kind, since the first was made by the Republic of Zaire, in Africa.
The Diocese of San Cristóbal, in charge of the initiative, said they were very proud of this step since they have previously advocated for the native peoples by translating the Bible into Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Chol, and Tojolabal.
