A municipal police officer in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, died hours after being shot by alleged members of the Sinaloa Cartel.
The municipal government reported the death of Officer Alfredo G. M., resulting from “an incident that occurred early Sunday morning in the city center.”
The cause of the incident is still unclear, but it is believed the officer intervened when a group of men were “creating a disturbance in public.”
One of the suspects shot the officer in the head.
Municipal President Fabiola Ricci confirmed that the officer received urgent medical attention; however, he died hours later.
The attack on the police officer sparked intense protests in San Cristóbal de las Casas, which left nine people arrested.
The Secretariat of National Security announced the arrest of Abad N., Ángel N., Gamaliel N., Cristian N., Gerardo N., Juan N., Romino N., Antonio N., and Manlio N., alias “El M.”
It stated that the detainees claimed to belong to the Sinaloa Cartel.
The nine individuals were seized with four handguns and a long gun, as well as a Grand Cherokee SUV, a Territor, and another Mustang.
