This Monday afternoon, the Casa de las Artesanías (House of Crafts) was inaugurated at the Regional DIF (National Institute of Cultural Heritage) facilities, located in the heart of the historic center of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, at the intersection of Niños Héroes and Miguel Hidalgo streets. This space aims to promote and highlight the artisanal work of the indigenous communities of Los Altos de Chiapas.
In this first phase, pieces created by artisans from Amatenango del Valle and Oxchuc are on display. They present traditional textiles, pottery, embroidery, and other handmade items that reflect ancestral techniques and the cultural richness of their communities.
Regarding this, Isabel Granda González, a representative of the State DIF (National Institute of Cultural Heritage), stated in an interview that the Casa de las Artesanías (House of Crafts) seeks to promote fair trade and strengthen the recognition of local cultural expressions, consolidating itself as a permanent center for the dissemination of Chiapas folk art.
“Today, the inauguration of the craft rooms took place here in the state delegation of San Cristóbal de Las Casas. This time, we have two municipalities: Amatenango del Valle and Oxchuc, which will be present from today until the end of August. We invite the public to come and meet and visit our artisans, and appreciate the handicrafts of these wonderful indigenous municipalities,” she stated.
Nataly Montero preserves family tradition with this typical Chiapas dish, which is served early in the morning and is a favorite in her kitchen in the city center.
Finally, she emphasized that all the crafts are made by women, who have dedicated themselves diligently to preparing them for display.
“Let’s support the artisans of Chiapas, come buy our products. After these two municipalities, others will follow, and the calendar will be announced in due time. We must give all artisans space to showcase their products,” she concluded.
