Tabasco and Chiapas will work together to transfer homeless people to rehabilitation centers

As an immediate and temporary measure, the Tabasco DIF System will sign a collaboration agreement with the government of the state of Chiapas to transfer homeless individuals with addiction problems to rehabilitation centers located in the municipality of Pichucalco.

This inter-institutional strategy seeks to provide assistance to this vulnerable sector of the Tabasco capital while the state project to establish its own facilities is being finalized. In this regard, the Coordinator of the Tabasco DIF System, Víctor de Dios Gómez, explained that they are already working on establishing a connection with the Chiapas authorities.

“The governor, as he has stated in several morning press conferences, is going to build an addiction rehabilitation center, but we are also working on establishing a connection with the state of Chiapas. We are going to request their support so that they can receive some of the homeless individuals who are here in Villahermosa; we are going to send them to Pichucalco,” the coordinator stated.

The state official explained that the Chiapas authorities have shown a willingness to collaborate and have three centers throughout their territory. As a first step, an initial offer of spaces has been established, although the official number will be determined after the legal document is signed.

“They initially offered us five spaces. We reached an agreement; we will sign the agreement first before specifying exactly how many people they can accommodate. Obviously, the space is limited, but we are going to start. This will improve because very soon the governor will build a much-needed center for the state,” he explained.

To ensure that aid reaches those who truly need it, the Tabasco DIF (System for Integral Family Development) will begin a comprehensive mapping exercise in the city of Villahermosa within a month. This assessment will allow them to identify “hot spots” and the people living in these conditions in order to develop a comprehensive action plan.

Before carrying out any transfers, the Tabasco DIF will explore other avenues of assistance, prioritizing the identity of the individuals and their reintegration into their families. Only in cases where an addiction is confirmed and it is necessary, will the transfer to the neighboring state be carried out.
